Every July, the city of Punaauia<\/a> celebrates its flagship event: the traditional Orange Festival. This tradition, which continues through the generations, brings together the inhabitants of Punaauia, mainly men, in a unique and exhilarating adventure in the Punaru’u valley, to harvest the precious oranges that grow abundantly in the heart of the island of Tahiti. It’s a celebration of the union between man and nature, where the strength and courage of the orange bearers are honored.<\/p>\n

At dawn, the volunteers embark on an arduous hike lasting at least six hours (round trip), braving steep paths and natural obstacles. They set off in search of the famous oranges in the valleys of central Tahiti, to fill their loads (30 to 100 kg approx.): a sturdy piece of wood carried on their backs, to which are firmly attached two bags stuffed with oranges. This harvest is a real feat, where physical effort and tenacity are put to the test.<\/p>\n

The triumphant return to Punaauia is marked by a unique parade, where the orange bearers are admired by local residents and visitors from elsewhere, applauding this demonstration of bravery, courage and love for their history.
